About the Artisan

Pendza Weavers

Young people learn the arts of spinning cotton thread and weaving cotton cloth from their elders. The thread is made from Kenyan cotton grown at some of the neighboring farms, unlike most thread made in Kenya, which is made of imported cotton. It takes almost one week to make a woven sheet, and this produces 5 scarves. As the village is rural, it is hard for the Pendza weavers to sell their products locally to tourists, therefore, international fair trade sales are life changing for them.
